Business Career Review | Online Share Dealing, Trading Stocks ...

Why choose business as a career?

Many of you may wonder exactly why people choose to become involved in the world of business as it can be a dog eat dog world full of disappointment and stress. To answer your question people choose to study for business as it is one of the most rewarding careers in the world and can offer the successful business person a host of benefits once they have become qualified and gained experience. In order to undertake a Business Career Review, we have compiled some useful information below, to assist anyone who is unsure if this career is the right one for them.

There are many ways to break into the business world such as learning a trade and starting your own business but the most common way is for the potential business person to enrol in any of the huge variety of business courses in the United Kingdom. During these courses which can range from an L.L.M degree to a simple foundation course the student will be taught all the skills that they will need to become successful. These skills when used properly will enable the person to make management decision, forecast revenues as well as many other skills such as man management and accounts. If we look at the syllabus for one of these courses such as the L.L.M in International Business Law we will see that the student will be required to learn a host of topics. The Icloud Careers Website?is a new concept offering an online Careers advice service for all ages, we highly recommend a browse, as it is packed with some very interesting facts and help sheets for anyone who is unsure which career path to choose.

These topics can consist of comprehensively learning issues such as Company Formation, Corporate Personality, Corporate Theory, The Functions of Companies as well as many further topics such as Liquidation and Directors Duties. More information on UK Company Structures can be located on the Companies House Website.

As you can see many of these courses will aim to teach you a broad selection of skills that when used right can make you effective at your job. You will also find on courses like this that you will be required to learn aspects of business that you would never have heard of before and this can be tough. The average courses length for a degree course in business is three years full time or if available five years part time so as you can see this type of course will require a huge commitment from the student.

With all this in mind you may still be wondering why would you wish to do this and what benefits would you get from taking on such a challenge? There are many benefits from becoming fully involved in business with the most important reason in many peoples eyes is the salary. The average wage for someone who works mid level in business in the United Kingdom is around ?40,000 per annum but this can vary in range dramatically depending on the business and the area. There are some very good resources on the Berkeley University Business pages of there website, offering a valuable overview of Business Career types and what else to expect from a Career in this industry.

Another reason to be involved in business is that it can provide you with new challenges each day which is very rare in many jobs as they can become repetitive. As the business world changes each second of the day so does the requirements of the businessman so you will rarely see a day that is the same as the one before. Business will also give you the chance to earn the respect you deserve as you will be able to show your skills more often than not with issues such as marketing and so on. As you can see there are many reasons you should take a business course if you thinking about it as for the right people it these course can be the stepping stone to greatness.

Mash Mad Snowy after 4-length win set to shine in Coral Supports ...

Mash Mad Snowy after 4-length win set to shine in Coral Supports Macmillan Cancer Stayers at Romford

Mash Mad Snowy gained reward for persistency with a bold win last time around. Having returned to the winning ways, the blue dog is flushed with pride, and looks in a great position to offer more. S. Cahill?s charge is likely to build on his fresh success, and produce a favourite result in the Coral Supports Macmillan Cancer Stayers at Romford on Friday, December 28th.

The son of Droopys Maldini, out of Shades Of Snow, showed great consistency during the previous few weeks. After grabbing the runner-up place at Hove, the dashing hound continued the great work, and ran a couple of fine races ahead of reaching here. It would be a foolish move to take him lightly following an outstanding triumph.

Other hounds in the pack are: Lanrigg Paddy, Proper Cat, Star Cash Simon, Mays Millhouse, and Centurion Dolly. The 575 metres contest is scheduled to begin at 22:26 GMT. The successful dog will leave the field with a handy prize of 175 pounds. An exciting battle is imminent.

Proper Cat has a tough question to answer here. The black bitch won an open race here on December 7th, but lost her momentum thereafter. She was unlucky on her previous two outings, respectively finishing third and second on the table.

Mays Millhouse will be looking to make a move in the second half. His recent figures are not impressive at all. The black dog could only get the third place the last twice. Star Cash Simon, the Essex Vase victor, is looking to ping the lids. The brindle dog is short of confidence after completing the order of finish at Wimbledon.

Centurion Dolly may have to wait for a better opportunity. The bitch ran well in her previous two races, but had no luck on her side. P. Young?s trainee was runner-up last twice, and needs something different to break the shackles.

Lanrigg Paddy showed his skills on last visit, and could pass this test in good style. According to our calculations, the David Pruhs-trained is the main danger to Mash Mad Snowy. We wish the best of luck to all the hounds.

Wall St Week Ahead - Cliff may be a fear, but debt ceiling much scarier

REUTERS - Investors fearing a stock market plunge - if the United States tumbles off the "fiscal cliff" next week - may want to relax.

But they should be scared if a few weeks later, Washington fails to reach a deal to increase the nation's debt ceiling because that raises the threat of a default, another credit downgrade and a panic in the financial markets.

Market strategists say that while falling off the cliff for any lengthy period - which would lead to automatic tax hikes and stiff cuts in government spending - would badly hurt both consumer and business confidence, it would take some time for the U.S. economy to slide into recession. In the meantime, there would be plenty of chances for lawmakers to make amends by reversing some of the effects.

That has been reflected in a U.S. stock market that has still not shown signs of melting down. Instead, it has drifted lower and become more volatile.

In some ways, that has let Washington off the hook. In the past, a plunge in stock prices forced the hand of Congress, such as in the middle of the financial crisis in 2008.

"If this thing continues for a bit longer and the result is you get a U.S. debt downgrade ... the risk is not that you lose two-and-a-half percent, the risk is that you lose ten and a half," said Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equity strategist at UBS Equity Research, in New York.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said this week that the United States will technically reach its debt limit at the end of the year.

INVESTORS WARY OF JANUARY

The White House has said it will not negotiate the debt ceiling as in 2011, when the fight over what was once a procedural matter preceded the first-ever downgrade of the U.S. credit rating. But it may be forced into such a battle again. A repeat of that war is most worrisome for markets.

Markets posted several days of sharp losses in the period surrounding the debt ceiling fight in 2011. Even after a bill to increase the ceiling passed, stocks plunged in what was seen as a vote of "no confidence" in Washington's ability to function, considering how close lawmakers came to a default.

Credit ratings agency Standard & Poor's lowered the U.S. sovereign rating to double-A-plus, citing Washington's legislative problems as one reason for the downgrade from triple-A status. The benchmark S&P 500 dropped 16 percent in a four-week period ending August 21, 2011.

"I think there will be a tremendous fight between Democrats and Republicans about the debt ceiling," said Jon Najarian, a co-founder of online brokerage TradeMonster.com, in Chicago.

"I think that is the biggest risk to the downside in January for the market and the U.S. economy."

There are some signs in the options market that investors are starting to eye the January period with more wariness. The CBOE Volatility Index <.vix>, or the VIX, the market's preferred indicator of anxiety, has remained at relatively low levels throughout this process, though on Thursday it edged above 20 for the first time since July.

More notable is the action in VIX futures markets, which shows a sharper increase in expected volatility in January than in later-dated contracts. January VIX futures are up nearly 23 percent in the last seven trading days, compared with a 13 percent increase in March futures and an 8 percent increase in May futures. That's a sign of increasing near-term worry among market participants.

The CBOE Volatility Index closed on Friday at 22.72, gaining nearly 17 percent to end at its highest level since June as details emerged of a meeting on Friday afternoon of President Barack Obama with Senate and House leaders from both parties where the president offered proposals similar to those already rejected by Republicans. Stocks slid in late trading and equity futures continued that slide after cash markets closed.

"I was stunned Obama didn't have another plan, and that's absolutely why we sold off," said Mike Shea, a managing partner and trader at Direct Access Partners LLC, in New York.

Obama offered hope for a last-minute agreement to avoid the fiscal cliff after a meeting with congressional leaders, although he scolded Congress for leaving the problem unresolved until the 11th hour.

"The hour for immediate action is here," he told reporters at a White House briefing. "I'm modestly optimistic that an agreement can be achieved."

The U.S. House of Representatives is set to convene on Sunday and continue working through the New Year's Day holiday. Obama has proposed maintaining current tax rates for all but the highest earners.

Consumers don't appear at all traumatized by the fiscal cliff talks, as yet. Helping to bolster consumer confidence has been a continued recovery in the housing market and growth in the labor market, albeit slow.

The latest take on employment will be out next Friday, when the U.S. Labor Department's non-farm payrolls report is expected to show jobs growth of 145,000 for December, in line with recent growth.

Consumers will see their paychecks affected if lawmakers cannot broker a deal and tax rates rise, but the effect on spending is likely to be gradual.

PLAYING DEFENSE

Options strategists have noted an increase in positions to guard against weakness in defense stocks such as General Dynamics because those stocks would be affected by spending cuts set for that sector. Notably, though, the PHLX Defense Index is less than 1 percent away from an all-time high reached on December 20.

This underscores the view taken by most investors and strategists: One way or another, Washington will come to an agreement to offset some effects of the cliff. The result will not be entirely satisfying, but it will be enough to satisfy investors.

"Expectations are pretty low at this point, and yet the equity market hasn't reacted," said Carmine Grigoli, chief U.S. investment strategist at Mizuho Securities USA, in New York. "You're not going to see the markets react to anything with more than a 5 (percent) to 7 percent correction."

Save for a brief 3.6 percent drop in equity futures late on Thursday evening last week after House Speaker John Boehner had to cancel a scheduled vote on a tax-hike bill due to lack of Republican support, markets have not shown the same kind of volatility as in 2008 or 2011.

A gradual decline remains possible, Golub said, if business and consumer confidence continues to take a hit on the back of fiscal cliff worries. The Conference Board's measure of consumer confidence fell sharply in December, a drop blamed in part on the fiscal issues.

"If Congress came out and said that everything is off the table, yeah, that would be a short-term shock to the market, but that's not likely," said Richard Weiss, a Mountain View, California-based senior money manager at American Century Investments.

"Things will be resolved, just maybe not on a good time table. All else being equal, we see any further decline as a buying opportunity."

Moog Music tacks on Grateful Dead expansion pack to Animoog 2.0 (video)

Late last week, Moog Music rolled out version 2.0 of its Animoog synthesizer app for Apple's slate. Now, the Asheville, North Carolina outfit is adding a truckload of new sounds less than a week after the initial release. The Grateful Dead Expansion Pack is now available for the iPad software, touting 82 presets and 45 timbres broken down into ensemble, percussion and vocal groupings. Each piece of the add-on was taken from a February 1968 performance at the Carousel Ballroom and optimized for the Animoog platform. "We're not simply providing samples from the Grateful Dead's body of work, rather we've distilled the essence of notes and phrases in a different way to transform these performances into new instruments -- new voices," says Cyril Lance, Moog's Chief Engineer. The $4.99 in-app purchase is available now, but while you're mulling it over, jump down past the break to catch a glimpse of Mickey Hart taking it for a spin.

Students' online and offline social networks can predict course grades

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Ben-Gurion University of the Negev's (BGU) Social Networks Security Research Group in its Department of Information Systems Engineering has developed a novel method to predict how well or badly a student will perform in an academic course.

The information can be used to determine which students need the most help, as well as which ones excel and might be guided to further study or careers in that subject area. The paper, "Predicting Student Exam Scores by Analyzing Social Network Data," was presented earlier this month at the Advanced Media Technology Conference in Macau, Hong Kong.

According to co-author and Ph.D. student Michael Fire, "While most papers about social network analysis deal solely with information gathered online, this study draws some of the information from the real world -- social interactions which were conducted off the grid."

The researchers analyzed data from a BGU course that included assignments submitted online and Web site logs (containing 10,759 entries) to construct social networks of explicit and implicit cooperation among the students. The implicit connections are used to model all the social interactions that happened "offline" among the students: e-mails with questions, conversations in the lab while preparing the assignments and even course forums.

"These connections were very important, as we sought to model the social interactions within the student body," Fire explains.

In addition to analyzing the online submissions of the students who had to work in pairs or in groups, they also tracked login time and computer usage. For instance, if two students submitted their assignments from the same computer, it was a likely indication that the two had worked together to complete the assignment. If two students submitted assignments from different computers, but one right after the other on more than one occasion, the authors gave a value to that data, as well.

"One explanation for what we discovered is that your friends influence your grade in the course, so, if you pick your friends well, then you will get a higher grade," Fire says. "Alternatively, social networks in courses offer conditions whereby good students will pair with other good students, and similarly weaker ones will pair with weaker students."

Japan PM adviser urges unlimited BOJ easing, higher price goal

TOKYO (Reuters) - The Bank of Japan should buy more long-dated government bonds and a wider variety of risk asset types, including foreign bonds, to achieve 2 to 3 percent inflation, Koichi Hamada, a special economic adviser to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, said on Thursday.

Hamada, 76, professor emeritus of economics at Yale University, also called for revising the BOJ Law that guarantees the central bank's independence, to make it more accountable for achieving its policy objectives.

"Generally speaking, the BOJ is making an effort. But there is hardly any change to its pace of 'too little, too late'," said Hamada, who was appointed a special adviser to Abe's cabinet.

"It is necessary to amend the BOJ law," he told Reuters in a telephone interview on Thursday.

The views of Hamada, who had been privately advising Abe before he was sworn in as Japan's prime minister on Wednesday, are likely to have a significant impact on the new government's policies.

"The BOJ should not only buy long-term bonds but purchase a wider type of assets such as commercial paper, real estate investment trusts (REITs) and shares, which will help to have an impact on the economy," said Hamada, who taught BOJ Governor Masaaki Shirakawa when he was a student at Japan's prestigious Tokyo University.

"I think buying foreign currency-denominated assets can also be a part of an effective monetary policy."

Hamada said it was desirable for the BOJ to set an inflation target of 2 to 3 percent to revive the economy and to help keep sharp yen rises in check.

While Japan should not target a specific exchange rate when guiding monetary policy, the level of the yen could be one way of measuring the extent of policy loosening, he said.

"The yen's weakening to close to 95 or 100 yen (per dollar) would be evidence of the effectiveness of monetary policy. The BOJ should ease monetary policy until inflation occurs, and the yen and prices are reacting appropriately," he said.

Abe, whose Liberal Democratic Party won a landslide victory in a lower house election on December 16, has called on the BOJ to set a 2 percent inflation target, double the bank's current goal, and to ease policy "without limits" to beat deflation. He has also threatened to revise the BOJ Law if his demands are not met, turning up the heat on the central bank.

The yen fell to a two-year low against the dollar and Tokyo stocks hit a 21-month high on Thursday, on expectations that Abe's government will pursue aggressive fiscal and monetary stimulus.

The BOJ already eased monetary policy last week via an increase in asset purchases, offering its third stimulus step in four months. It has also signaled that it will set a higher inflation target at its next meeting in January.

But Hamada, who headed the Japanese Cabinet Office's Economic and Social Research Institute, a government think tank, from 2001 to 2003, said the December measures were not enough.

"Everything the BOJ does is behind the curve," he said.

Who's killing the electric car? Consumers.

Sales of Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf are far short of expectations. Fisker and other electric-car makers are in trouble. Will the lack of consumer sales kill the electric car, just as it did in the '90s?

By Robert Rapier,?Contributor / December 27, 2012

Nissan Motor Co.'s latest Leaf electric car is displayed for media in Tokyo last month. The electric car won't meet its sales targets this year, Nissan concedes.

The 2006 documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car" explores GM's attempts to bring an electric car to market in the mid-1990s. The usual suspects are trotted out ? the oil industry, the automakers, and the government ? and for years many electric car enthusiasts have believed that it was anything but the consumer that killed the electric car.?
?
Fast forward to 2012 and it appears that the electric car industry is again struggling to survive. Sales of the Chevy Volt have fallen far short of expectations, and Nissan Motors CEO Carlos Ghosn?has now admitted?they will not meet 2012 sales targets for the Nissan Leaf.
?
In a recent report, Katie Fehrenbacher noted "A123 Systems, Fisker Automotive and Better Place ? representing billions of dollars of investment in the future of electric cars ? are now facing major problems financially and commercially."

?
The problem is simply that consumers are not flocking to electric cars as fast as expected. The reasons are primarily the higher initial cost of the car, and certainly some concerns about the range and the possibility of becoming stranded by the car. Early reports from??stranded Nissan Leaf owners?stoked those fears. Even though "Who Killed the Electric Car" completely exonerated batterymakers in the death of the electric car, today's batteries still do not have enough range to satisfy many consumers.?

On the other hand, it is true that when hybrids were first mass-produced in the late 1990s, for several years the market was dominated by the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight. At that time oil prices were low, and sales in the early years were very slow. Today, hybrids are very much mainstream, primarily because high oil prices have made them better choices for more consumers.?

If oil prices remain high over the next few years, the electric car may eventually gain some traction ? if consumers don't kill it again first.

Norway's stroller mafia empowered by generous parental leave

Parent power: Norway's generous parental leave creates a social space for the stroller mafia that clogs cafes and stops traffic. It's a perfect place to be as a new parent.

Members of the clan are fearless and prefer to do their work in broad daylight. They?re easy to spot, often travel in packs and can be aggressive when on the streets, yet no one dare respond to an ?inadvertent? bump with anything but an apology. These mafia operatives don?t use traditional weapons but are harshly trained through methods of sleep deprivation and are not to be crossed.

They?re called the?barnevognmafia.

Translated literally: child wagon mafia. The ?operatives? I?m referring to are parents, mostly mothers enjoying their nearly year-long, fully paid maternity leave. I am a proud member of this clan.

Barnevogn?is Norwegian for stroller and the ones here need a big name like that because they are?enormous. Hefty tires for the snow, big seats with bulky canopies to keep kids warm in sub-zero temperatures, and they morph into mini-beds for their sleeping cargo. Mothers walk with an assumed ownership of the footpaths in Oslo because it?s the only way anyone will let you through with a hulking stroller that takes up half the sidewalk.

And yes, these super-colossal kid carriers work as weapons too ? one quick turn and we?ll skin your shins with the front spoke of the stroller.

Our fashion of organized crime is to clog cafes with our baby bags and ?child wagons.? Our kids whimper, whine and scream while we gab on with our fellow operatives because, like Sicilian mafiosi? desensitized to violence, we can tune out our crying children. There?s always something wrong and we might as well talk a little louder and find out who is up to what.

We also part-take in another activity that makes onlookers, particularly of the male variety, uncomfortable. But hey, when a baby is hungry he?s hungry so nursing while sipping a latte at United Bakeries is part of the deal. It?s a useful method of (comical) intimidation that comes in handy if someone rolls their eyes when they see a mother stroll into a public space with a noise-polluting baby.

The?barnevognmafia?isn?t a real organization in Oslo but the existence of the term in the zeitgeist reflects the camaraderie that forms among parents. There is an inherent understanding of the trials of early parenthood: sleepless nights, tantrums, potty training?

The power parents have in Norway is what makes this place perfect for me at this time in my life. The amount of help the government provides young families has effectively set high social expectations for the community to do their part.

If a driver sees someone with a pram about to cross the street they come to a halting stop as if royalty is being carried through. Public transportation was built with oversized strollers?in mind and locals are always on standby to help, whether it?s lifting it onto the tram or holding open a door. I?ve never been able to thank anyone because they run off before you even realize that you?ve been helped.

You can take your kids anywhere here and not only are they welcomed, but restaurants and museums have thought about how best to adapt to what kids need. I think this star treatment of young families is well deserved. Parenthood, while rewarding, is challenging and if society can do anything to help, it should.

And if you don?t agree: watch out. The?barnevognmafia?is everywhere and a clan member could unleash a screaming toddler during your romantic dinner just for the fun of it.

What do you want to do with the file? (Please don't just say "edit," that can mean so many different things. Be specific.)

I saw this photo on Facebook and asked Mutt Lynch Winery permission to use it on my blog. (thank you)

As you know I have greyhounds (but love all dogs) and I love wine so I could not resist.

As for Mutt Lynch Winery, they have the kind of outlook that we should all have ? think like? a dog ? ?bark less, wag more.?

Their motto is ?Apply Dog Logic to Life: Eat Well, Be Loved, Get Petted, Sleep Alot, Dream of a Leash-Free World.?? ? Sark

Mutt Lynch Winery is located in?Healdsburg, Calif. (their wine tasting room is dog friendly) but you can live anywhere to get? wine shipped to you by joining Club Mutt. Also a portion of every wine sale, goes to pet rescue. I?ll drink to that!

You can check out their products here where every label has a dog. I wonder if there is a marketing study as to what draws people to wine labels? Colors? Animals? Faces? Landscapes? Provocative poses?

According to this article, ?Of all the bottle beasts, none is more iconic than the domesticated canine. Wine labels that depict dogs make consumers sit up, roll over and beg.? Enough said. Woof!

Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N5100 possibly seen testing, may put quad Exynos in a small tablet

Samsung Galaxy Note GTN5100 possibly caught testing, may bring quad Exynos to small tablets

Feeling that Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 could use some more grunt? There's a chance you'll get your wish. An unannounced Galaxy Note GT-N5100 has popped up in benchmark scores with what looks to be a 1.6GHz Exynos 4412, better known as the Exynos 4 Quad variant that's used in the speedy Galaxy Note II. We don't know that it's a small tablet, but the 1,280 x 800 resolution matches that of the Galaxy Note 10.1 -- it's not very likely that Samsung wants to duplicate its recent design efforts. Whatever the dimensions, the testing shows that the slate is using Android 4.1.2, and it may be a cellular-equipped model with that "kona3g" codename. If the GT-N5100 is more than just a set of benchmarks, the real question may be when we'll see it; there's no guarantee of a tinier Galaxy Note in Las Vegas.

tulsidas toenail: jugindarsharma8: Shopping and Product Reviews ...

The popularity of online shopping has been seen by many as a threat to the existence of traditional shopping. Their argument is based on the recent widespread closure of established brands like Sears and Best Buy. But can we really say that traditional shopping is dying?

In 2011, even though the U.S economy was sluggish, shopping grew by 15% over the previous year. In addition, about 35% of Americans now have smartphones which enable them to purchase goods and services over the internet and this figure is expected to rise significantly in subsequent years. In actual fact, about half of smartphone users have used their phones for one purchase or the other. On Christmas day of 2011 alone, about 6.8 million iOs and Android smartphones were activated. Top internet retailer, Amazon, recorded a whooping net sale of $48.08 billion in 2011 which represents 40.6% increase over $32.20 billion recorded in 2010. This figure is expected to rise in 2012 and subsequent years. What then is the implication of all these to physical retailing?

Since many people now decide to shop over the internet due to the benefits derivable in doing so like convenience, easy access to market, price comparison, avoidance of crowd, better prices and so on, can we really say that that the traditional way of shopping is being threatened? In my own opinion, technology will enhance the traditional method and not kill it. The popularity of video cassette recorder (VCR) in the 80?s was seen by many as a threat to movie theaters then, but today, the film industry has been strengthened by the new technology and the demand for films has increased.

Moreover, when the email became very popular, a lot people thought that the traditional postal service would die, but today, it is waxing stronger. The point I?m driving at here is that, if traditional shop owners can embrace new technology, shopping on the internet would not be a threat to them but a blessing.

If physical retailers can monitor shopping behavior through the use of Wi-Fi signals from smartphones, they would be able to compete favorably in a fast-changing world. They can use technology to measure loyalty, make better staffing decisions, improve store layouts, reduce wait times in checkout lines and so on. Online shopping has come to stay but it is not a threat to traditional shopping because many consumers still value some of its features like quality of customer service, the experience of trying and buying products, how products are displayed and so on.

State lab keeps the chance in casino games of chance | TribLIVE

By Mark Gruetze

Michael Cruz can walk out of his office and hit a slot machine jackpot any time he wants.

The only catch is that he can't collect the cash.

As director of Pennsylvania's Gaming Laboratory Operations, which tests slots and all other equipment used in gambling areas of the state's casinos, Cruz can have his staff program the lab's slot machines to hit a specific payout. That allows them to verify a machine pays out the number of credits it's supposed to, without the tester having to wait for a lucky spin as a casino patron would.

"We'll force the jackpot," says Cruz, standing in the Harrisburg lab, which holds more than 100 slot machines plus various gaming tables and other casino gear.

In a casino, slot reels spin according to the whims of a random-number generator, software whose sole function is to spit out groups of numbers.

Each number corresponds to a specific symbol on a reel of the display. The number combination generated at the instant a player hits the spin button determines what symbols will be displayed.

In the lab, "we cut the RNG out," Cruz says. Using software and codes provided by the manufacturer, a tester with access to the machine's "brain" enters the numbers corresponding to a jackpot.

"We restart the game and let it evaluate that combination," he says. Indicating a Game of Life machine, he explains that if five Game of Life symbols pay a jackpot, the tester verifies that five symbols show up - one on each reel ?- and that the game pays the promised jackpot value. Cruz says that in almost 10 years as a gaming regulator in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, he's encountered only one case of a machine failing a lab-payout test.

Pennsylvania, which has more than 26,000 slots and is among the top three states in gambling revenue, is one of the few jurisdictions with its own lab. Other than Nevada, New Jersey and Michigan, most states hire a private lab to test their machines. Slot manufacturers pay for Pennsylvania's testing.

"We are here to ensure that when a patron sits down at a game, they have a fair shake, that it's a fair game between them and the computer," Cruz says. "If they lose or they win, it was by luck and not by any other reasons."

The gaming lab has three main responsibilities:

? Verifying the math: Pennsylvania requires slots to have a theoretical payout rate of 85 percent to 99.999 percent. Statisticians review the probability of each possible combination and the proposed payment to make sure the long-term payout rate falls within that range. Manufacturers provide that information in top-secret PAR sheets, short for Probability Accounting Reports. In Pennsylvania and elsewhere, those are considered proprietary information, but a handful have become public. For samples, go to vegasclick.com . From July 2011 through June 2012, the lab rejected 3,350 of the 14,215 pay tables it examined.

? Engineering: This verifies not only that the machine pays as promised, but also that it communicates with the state's central computer system, which constantly monitors the coin-in and coin-out of each machine in the state.

? On-site review: Staffers examine complaints of machine malfunctions and monitor installations or changes on the floor.

Casinos can choose from as many as 20 payback percentages on a single slot machine, Cruz says. They might switch from one rate to another, as long as it meets the state minimum and they notify the lab of the planned change. Such notifications are not considered public record.

The payback percentage can be tweaked in a couple of ways. One, obviously enough, is raising or lowering the payouts, generally for a few common combinations. Another is to keep payouts the same but change the number of symbols on the reel or the probability of hitting them.

Players have no way of knowing the payout rate at a traditional slot machine, as opposed to a video poker machine.

State law specifies that no slot-payoff combination can have odds of more than 50 million to one, Cruz says. Odds that high would likely be for the big payout on a progressive jackpot.

No matter how long the odds, each spin has an equal chance of hitting a jackpot.

"What we do here is to preserve that aspect," Cruz says. "Random chance (is) the reason why your outcome came the way it did. There's no other ulterior motive behind your winning streak, your losing streak or whatever."
